Scientific Workshop

Under the patronage and presence of the Dean of the College of Political Science, Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. Osama Murtada Baqir Al-Saidi, the Department of International Economic Relations, in cooperation with the Educational Guidance Committee, organized a scientific workshop titled “Extremism: Causes, Patterns, and Ways to Confront it”.

The workshop was supervised and organized by Prof. Dr. Wasan Ihsan Abdul-Munim and Asst. Prof. Ali Abdul-Rahim Kazim.

Three research papers were presented:

  1. Prof. Dr. Laila Ashour Hajim and Dr. Fian Hadi Kazim presented a paper titled “The Role of International Institutions in Combating Extremism: The World Bank as a Model”, which discussed international efforts to reduce the causes of extremism through hard and soft power strategies in cooperation with international institutions, particularly the World Bank.
  2. Dr. Riyam Ali Hussein presented a paper titled “Extremism: Concept and Causes”, which addressed the conceptual and interpretive aspects of the factors leading to extremism.
  3. Asst. Prof. Anwar Hamed Hamad presented a paper titled “Patterns of Extremism: Multiple Manifestations and the Danger of Intellectual and Behavioral Divisions”, which reviewed classifications of extremism and its transformations.

The workshop witnessed interactions through a number of scientific discussions and interventions by professors, researchers, and postgraduate students, which contributed to deepening understanding of the topic and exchanging views on ways to reduce extremism and mechanisms to confront it.
