Political Science Holds a Symposium on Elections
Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Political Science at Al-Nahrain University, Professor Dr. Osama Murtada Baqir Al-Saeedi, the Department of Political Systems and Public Policies in the College organized a scientific symposium titled (The Electoral System in the Iraqi Parliamentary Elections 2025: An Analytical Vision).
Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz Alaiwi, a lecturer at the College of Political Science at Al-Anbar University, presented a paper addressing the legal, legislative, and political aspects of these elections. He covered fundamental concepts, including the mechanism of the electoral system and the electorate, as well as the most important standards specific to each electoral system adopted in different political systems.
For his part, Mr. Mazen Abdul Ridha Sawadi, an expert at the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), Baghdad-Rusafa Branch, discussed the most important types of electoral systems adopted in Iraq since the 2005 elections and subsequent electoral rounds.
He also addressed the mechanism for distributing and calculating electoral seats for general seats, women’s quota seats, and minority seats. He provided a detailed explanation of the method of calculating votes, the mechanism of electronic counting, and how votes are distributed through open or closed electoral lists.
The lecturers listened to the interventions from the attendees, including faculty members and students of the College.
