Master’s Thesis Discussion Held at the College of Political Science, Al-Nahrain University

The College of Political Science at Al-Nahrain University held a discussion on the master’s thesis of Maysam Husain, titled “Political Elites and Their Role in Political Stability: A Comparative Study of Tunisia and Egypt After 2011”.

The examination committee consisted of:

  • Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali Hamud (Chairman)
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Sina Ali Mahmoud (Member)
  • Dr. Muhammad Mahi Muhammad (Member)
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Zaid Hasan Ali (Member and Supervisor)

The thesis aimed to analyze the role of political elites in Tunisia and Egypt in achieving political stability after 2011, evaluating their performance in managing the transitional phase and their contribution to supporting or weakening the democratic process.

Key findings:

  • The elites in both countries inherited a heavy authoritarian legacy characterized by centralization and exclusion, negatively impacting their ability to manage democratic transition.
  • The elites faced similar economic and social challenges, such as unemployment and deteriorating social justice, weakening their legitimacy and creating regional and international pressures.
  • The elites lacked a long-term strategic vision, often reacting to crises instead of formulating a comprehensive national project.
