Lecture on the Role of the United Nations in Elections
Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Political Science, Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. Osama Murtada Baqir Al-Saidi, the Department of International Politics organized a lecture on the role of the United Nations in achieving transparency and integrity in the 2025 Iraqi legislative elections.
The lecture, chaired by Dr. Riyadh Mahdi Abdul-Kazim, presented by Dr. Ali Muhammad Amneef, and moderated by Dr. Nouruddin Abdullah Nayif, discussed the United Nations’ efforts to support elections in Iraq, including:
- Technical assistance: Providing legal, operational, and logistical support to develop or improve electoral laws, processes, and institutions.
- Creating a conducive environment: The role of the UN Secretary-General’s Representative in Iraq.
- Election observation: Deploying a mission to observe all stages of the electoral process and submitting a report to the Secretary-General.
- Contributions of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI):
- Providing training courses for candidates before the elections.
- Developing the capacities of female candidates through special programs.
- Deploying mobile teams to polling stations and documenting observations.
- Monitoring the electoral competition period and submitting reports to the Secretary-General on equal opportunities for lists and candidates.
- Deploying 300 international observers to monitor the elections.
- Monitoring special and general voting.
The lecture also discussed the impact of elections on the stability of the political system, emphasizing the importance of democratic practice and the role of elections in consolidating the concept of state and democracy
