Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Political Science, Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. Osama Murtada Baqir Al-Saidi, the Human Rights Unit, in cooperation with the Scientific Affairs Division and the Continuing Education Unit, organized a festival on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

A lecture titled “The Effects of Poverty on Students’ Academic Achievement and Proposed Solutions” was presented by Asst. Prof. Mahdi Ali Wadaa, a lecturer at the college, who stated that poverty is a state of deprivation of basic needs and resources necessary for a dignified life. He added that poverty has various social and economic causes and effects on students’ academic achievement, affecting their ability to focus, understand, and receive proper education, as well as their mental health, which enables them to achieve self-realization, invest their abilities, and form a balanced personality.

Mr. Wadaa proposed a set of solutions, including providing services, eradicating corruption, activating transparency and justice, and spreading the spirit of social solidarity.

Asst. Prof. Saif Nabhan Ismail, Head of the Human Rights Unit, explained that the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, declared by the United Nations on January 22, 1992, aims to highlight the challenges faced by the poor worldwide and raise awareness of the need to protect their human rights.

The workshop, moderated by Asst. Prof. Saba Rashid Jubair, included discussions and interventions related to poverty as a violation of human rights and the most important ways to eradicate it.
