Field Visit to the Central Bank of Iraq

Under the auspices of the Dean of the College of Political Science at Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. Osama Murtada Baqir Al-Saidi, the Department of Economic Relations organized a field visit to the Central Bank of Iraq, Statistics and Research Department.

The visit was attended by postgraduate students (Master’s level) accompanied by faculty members:

  • Prof. Dr. Malik Daham Mutab
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Randa Talal Hassan
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Fian Hadi Kazem

The visit aimed to enhance the practical aspect of postgraduate students and link theoretical concepts to reality, introducing them to the mechanisms of the Central Bank’s work and its role in managing monetary policy, maintaining financial stability, and supporting economic development in Iraq.

The academic delegation met with Prof. Dr. Samir Fakhri Naim Al-Waeli, Director General of the Statistics and Research Department at the Central Bank of Iraq, and heads of departments.

Al-Waeli presented an overview of the department’s tasks and mechanisms in collecting statistical data, analyzing economic indicators, and preparing studies to support monetary and financial decision-making.

Students asked questions about exchange rates, monetary policy tools, and inflation control mechanisms, which were answered with practical examples.

The Director General expressed the Central Bank’s readiness for academic cooperation with Al-Nahrain University, encouraging postgraduate students to prepare theses and dissertations contributing to the development of monetary and financial policy in Iraq within the specialization of International Economic Relations.

The field visit highlighted the importance of integration between academia and executive institutions in building scientific capacities capable of analyzing financial and monetary policies. It expanded students’ understanding of the Central Bank’s role in managing the national economy, enhancing currency stability, and directing monetary policy tools to serve sustainable economic growth.

This field experience is a qualitative scientific addition, contributing to the consolidation of applied research culture and strengthening cooperation between Iraqi universities and national financial institutions.
