“Scientific Discussion

The College of Political Science at Al-Nahrain University held a discussion of the PhD thesis titled “Regional Organizations and Global Security Challenges since 2014: Selected Models”, for the student Karrar Farhan Hani Al-Taie, in the field of political science. The thesis aims to highlight the role of regional organizations in enhancing global security in a complex and changing international environment, through studying and analyzing selected models represented by the European Union and the African Union. The thesis reviewed the various challenges facing these organizations, such as conflicting interests among member states, lack of resources, external influences, weak organizational structures, as well as contemporary challenges related to digital dominance (such as data control and digital currencies like Bitcoin), and the militarization of outer space. The thesis reached a set of conclusions, most notably that the challenges related to digital dominance and the militarization of outer space reveal the urgent need to establish cooperative international regulatory frameworks to prevent the escalation of conflicts in this area. It also showed that institutional stagnation in some regional organizations may lead to weakening their effective role in maintaining global security
