A seminar on climate change, sponsored

A seminar on climate change, sponsored by the Dean of the College of Political Science, Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. Osama Murtadha B. Al-Saeedi, was held by the Department of Political Systems and Public Policies. The seminar, titled “Climate Change and its Impact on Food Security in Iraq”, featured Dr. Nasr Shamel Salman from the University of Baghdad.

The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Yasser Ali Ibrahim and Dr. Mufaz Ibrahim Dawud as rapporteur.

The seminar highlighted the impacts of climate change on food security in Iraq, one of the countries most affected by rising temperatures, frequent droughts, and decreasing rainfall. This has led to a decline in water resources in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, deterioration of agricultural lands, and increased desertification, negatively affecting agricultural production.

The seminar discussed challenges facing the agricultural sector, such as water scarcity, soil degradation, and limited use of modern technologies, as well as the impact of climate change on strategic crops like wheat and barley.

Participants emphasized the need for national policies to adapt to climate change, improve water resource management, and develop modern irrigation methods.

Recommendations included supporting farmers with modern agricultural technologies, promoting agricultural extension, encouraging drought-resistant crops, enhancing scientific research, and fostering cooperation between government institutions and international organizations, as well as raising public awareness about climate change risks.

The seminar concluded by stressing the importance of intensifying national efforts to achieve food security and environmental sustainability in Iraq.
