A lecture on the water crisis in Iraq.

Under the auspices of the Dean of the College of Political Sciences, Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Fares Hamid, the College of Political Sciences at Al-Nahrain University organized a lecture on the water crisis in Iraq as part of its annual scientific season.

The lecture, titled “The Water Crisis in Iraq: Challenges and Solutions,” was organized by the Department of Strategy in the College of Political Sciences in cooperation with the National Initiative (Iraq’s Thirst Project) and the Bahr Al-Uloom Forum for Dialogue and the Al-Alamin Institute for Graduate Studies.

The lecture was presented by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and was attended by the Dean of the College of Political Sciences, Mr. Ibrahim Bahr Al-Uloom, the Advisor to the Prime Minister for Scientific Affairs and Iraq’s Climate Envoy, Professor Fareed Yassin, and a number of interested parties and researchers.

Mr. Hussein Abdul Amir Baka, the Senior Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, provided a detailed explanation of the water crisis in Iraq, from the main sources in Turkey and Iran to the discharge of water into Iraqi territory. He noted that there is a real problem related to the water deficit due to the decline in the levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, as well as the problem of dam construction in upstream countries, which poses a threat to water resources and negatively impacts agriculture and all aspects of life.

The Undersecretary emphasized that the water crisis has forced Iraq to reduce agricultural areas to address the water shortage, in addition to other problems such as marshland drying, reduced rainfall, desertification, and population growth.

Professor Qasim Muhammad Ubaid, a lecturer in the Department of Strategy and a member of the National Initiative for the Iraq’s Thirst Project, delivered a speech emphasizing the project’s efforts to diagnose problems and develop effective solutions to eliminate the water crisis.

Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Fares Hamid, Dean of the College, stressed the need to activate political and diplomatic efforts between Iraq and neighboring countries to reach a solution to the water problem.

The lecture concluded with a set of recommendations and proposals to address the water crisis, and included a series of observations and interventions from the attendees, including those interested in political and environmental issues and graduate students
